My work investigates the constructed real, as seen on TV and in the newspapers. I am very interested in colloquialisms and generalisations, the idiosyncrasies and ‘mistakes’ which we have singled out as making us human and flawed. In my work, I construct situations which play these human errors off against the established systems of communication inherent to media organisations.
I work primarily with video recordings of live situations. In the editing process, I bring together combinations of structured and unstructured video sequences, both ‘packaging reality’ and illustrating documentary techniques. It is said that a skilful editor’s work goes unnoticed-I attempt through editing to underline my authorship. The aim of this is to disrupt the relationship between the visitor and the video, forcing people to digest new, strangely structured formats, thus comparing them to formats they have already encountered.
People are central to my practice, and I document their actions as they take part in a project, often finding it difficult to stop the camera rolling. I am concerned with the role of the editor, and I attempt different types of interjection with a piece of found footage in my practice. Ultimately I oversee each piece of footage, forcing it along a particular route, questioning its role at each stage while fully aware that each stage, including the process of making, is transitory. I don’t think this out of disdain for video but out of fascination. Films and videos are artefacts recording and reflecting an incident whilst permanently separated from it. Films and Videos are filling up vaults and archives, and are, I feel, a rich resource.
I collect masses of footage and have amassed a little, living archive of distorted recordings. These recordings show and do not show reality. They reflect thoughts and ideas without following a set structure. They relate to each other and the world but are mundane, apparently useless. My work, I feel, celebrates improvisation and attempts at community, criticising blindly followed curricula and supporting auto didacticism, adversity and agonism.
